About

With a long history of serving the Houston community, Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home and Earthman Resthaven Cemetery provide meaningful and compassionate services to people from all walks of life.

Since opening in 1928, Earthman Resthaven Cemetery has served the community as a beautiful final resting place. Built in 1982, Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home brings the best-in-class funeral and cremation services to north Houston.

Though our services and offerings have evolved in the 130 years since a blacksmith from Taylor, Texas, named James Bradshaw Earthman Sr. began assisting people with their funeral needs, our commitment to exceeding expectations has remained unchanged.

Convenient Houston funeral home

Signage at Earthman Resthaven Funeral HomeLocated north of the intersection of I-45 and Beltway 8, just southwest of George Bush International Airport, the funeral home and cemetery sit in the heart of north Houston, convenient to Spring, The Woodlands, Atascocita and more. Together, they serve a clientele as diverse as the Houston area itself.

Renovated and refurnished in 2017, Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home is a bright, spacious facility that is 18,000 square feet in size. Natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows floods the lobby and reception area. A chapel with a raised roof and bench seating holds 200 guests. Nearly 1,000 square feet are devoted to a multifunctional reception space, where families can host catered events—everything from a breakfast buffet or an afternoon coffee to a sit-down dinner—before, during or after funeral services.

Creative memorial ideas

Celebration of life venue for services, gatherings and receptions at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home and CemeteryEarthman Resthaven Funeral Home takes great pride in memorializing unique lives with unique services. Every service we design is personalized for the individual. Our team takes the time to ask questions, gather information and find special ways to convey the story of the person being celebrated.

Personal touches can be small—photo displays and speeches by friends are common—or more elaborate. We could hang a cross behind the casket, have a motorcycle at the front door or wear the jerseys of a person's favorite sports team. And if it's a grand celebration of life that you're looking for—a modern gathering with themed decor, live music, favorite food and drinks, and a send-off that reflects the personality and passions of yourself or your loved one—that's our speciality.

These are just a few ideas. We will honor your beach lover, bookworm or world traveler in a unique, wonderful way. Let's imagine something special together.

Veterans services

Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home sits 6.5 miles—about a 15-minute drive—from Houston National Cemetery, where members of the armed forces and their family members have been memorialized since 1965. The funeral home has performed the funerals of many men and women buried there, and our associates are well-versed in military funeral honors.

Here to serve you

Generations of families have depended on Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home and Earthman Resthaven Cemetery to provide compassionate care. We consider you our friend and neighbor and welcome the opportunity to serve you.

History

James Bradshaw Earthman Sr. was a blacksmith and livery service provider in Taylor, Texas. The town of Taylor purchased a horse-drawn hearse, and as proprietor of the livery stable, James was often asked by the townspeople to assist with their funeral needs. Beginning in 1889, providing funeral services became his full-time profession.

Established in 1904

In 1904, he and his friend J.C. McCarty (a railroad surveyor) moved to Houston and established Earthman and McCarty Undertaking Company at 715 Main St. It was the right thing at the right time, and the company prospered. In 1924, it moved to 2420 Fannin St. After McCarty’s death, the business name changed to J.B. Earthman Company.

James Jr. and Blanche

After the death of James Sr. in 1931, James B. (“J.B.”) Earthman Jr.—a graduate of St. Thomas High School and Rice University—left his successful architectural career to manage the company. His wife Blanche Bastien Earthman helped him with day-to-day business operations and was among the 1st women in Texas to become a licensed funeral director.

J.B. was a pioneer in advanced funeral planning, founding a burial insurance company in the 1930s. Together, J.B. and Blanche built Earthman Funeral Directors & Cemeteries into one of the larger family-owned-and-operated funeral companies in the United States. Their children and grandchildren continued to manage and expand the business with new locations throughout the community.

4 generations strong with John

In fact, James B. Earthman Sr.’s great-grandson John Earthman has worked at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home since he was 20 years old. Today, he continues to manage a local Dignity Memorial ® provider, upholding the commitment to a high standard of service and continued innovation that James B. Earthman Sr. started 130 years ago.

Earthman Resthaven Cemetery

Unique feature at Earthman Resthaven CemeteryOriginally built as a rural cemetery in 1928 surrounded only by farm fields and cow pastures, Earthman Resthaven Cemetery now lies in the heart of Houston. Yet once you are inside the cemetery, the tranquil, peaceful setting seems miles away from city life. From the moment you come through the brick and iron gates, you get a true sense of serenity. Sweeping green lawns and mature trees span 105 acres divided into numerous gardens and peppered with graceful statues.

Memorial options for all

Earthman Resthaven Cemetery offers many choices for memorialization. Whether your preference is in-ground burial, above-ground entombment or cremation inurnment, there is an option that reflects your family’s culture, traditions and budget.

The property comprises many sections with unique characteristics, including 5 areas consecrated by the Houston-Galveston Catholic Diocese. There are areas for flat markers and others with upright monuments. Cremated remains may be buried or held in cremation niches.

Mausoleums

Mausoleum at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery

Earthman Resthaven Cemetery has 3 mausoleums. Legacy Mausoleum was constructed in 2013 and sits in the newest section of the cemetery. Next to the Garden of Reflection (which opened in 2011 and combines community and estate burial options), Legacy Mausoleum is a community garden mausoleum with crypts and cremation niches available. Unlike the other 2 community mausoleums, covered walkways surround Legacy Mausoleum, providing visitors with comfortable shade.

Photos convey a lot, but we invite you to see the beautiful cemetery for yourself. You are welcome to visit Earthman Resthaven Cemetery anytime. If you would like a guided tour or more information, please call us. We would be delighted to show you around.

Community events
